The sharp strings are a menace to passing birds – especially kites and other raptors – who cannot see them and sometimes suffer grievous, if not fatal, wounds. The first injured bird Nadeem and Mohammad ever found was a Black Kite.

I am so happy to be back on 10,000 birds – I have missed Mike and Corey and my fellow Beat Writers! Normally I rant about environmental dangers and describe heartwarming/mind-boggling/headscratching wild bird rescues. This brings us to those puzzling aqua-deliveries, none of which ever seem to entail wildlife that live in water.

When my book “ Flyaway: How A Wild Bird Rehabber Sought Adventure and Found Her Wings ” came out in 2009, one of my favorite reviews was by Corey Finger of 10,000 Birds. I was used to photos shared by rehabbers – gory wounds, wince-inducing x-rays, fledglings with terrible feathering thanks to uninformed “rescuers.”

This is why certain wildlife rehabilitators end up misanthropic and homicidal. She is a medicine bird. Just the other day I was saying that I hope I never catch her.”.

Look in the middle, just over the trees: there’s a big flock of birds up there. The trail wound through the woods, over a footbridge hugging a creek, and along a marsh where cattails swayed in the gusty wind. Birds crows wildlife rehabilitators' Same thing with the photo below. All of the animals, birds and reptiles who live there are native species who were once injured, have gone through rehabilitation, and ended up with a permanent disability which prevented their return to the wild. He stopped his truck, rolled down the window and asked the bird if it needed assistance, but it did not respond.

The snake was wrapped firmly around the hawk’s tail, neck, and wings, and had enough strength to immobilize the bird but not to kill him. The snake had no puncture wounds, and was released 24 hours later. Key West Wildlife Center takes mostly birds, but will rescue mammals, marine mammals, and both land and sea turtles as well.
