If you’re a British birder, or a birder looking in to British birding, you could be forgiven sometimes for feeling it bears all the hallmarks of a good soap opera depending on where you surf. They provide little in the way of inspiration to the average birder and offer little real insight into birding in Britain in the 21st century.

When I give workshops, I almost always have someone come up to me and tell me how much they have spent on a spotting scope and camera and that every photo they take is utter crap. Also, the absolute worst time to get a new camera set up is right before you leave for a birding trip.

Although a quite common bird of Norfolk, for me it was an attractive lure and a possibility of a lifer. The biggest surprise among the Breydon birds was one Little Egret , only the first of several I was going to see that day. Still, the tide was not nearly as high as we hoped for and all the birds were quite far away.

I had been tracking a Yellow-billed Cuckoo as it fed in the canopy when Joanne (my life and birding partner) drew my attention to an exceptionally dark heron hunting in a small waterway. I was on a workshop field trip, learning about marine protected areas as my group snorkeled on one of the area’s famous coral reefs. Their populations have grown about 5% every year since 1966 , and their global breeding population is now larger than 120,000 birds. Still, they are sensitive to human disturbance.
