Next door to my hometown, the Gulf Breeze Zoo occupies 50 acres near the Santa Rosa Sound. Multiple varieties of ungulates jogged from place to place, while giant rhea birds stalked around looking for food. A few weeks later, I returned to the zoo, and sure enough, the nest was empty. Had they merely hatched?

I am only including them in this post to give you my real-life Kabul experience … Four species are the most easily seen in the few urban parks (into which women are not actually allowed to enter – I am not sure about female birds).

It is commonly kept in captivity and has therefore established many feral populations world-wide originating from escaped / released cage birds. This is what happens when people choose their pet birds on visual factors alone without taking vocalizations into account. Very stupid thing to do.

Given that according to the HBW, the species prefers dense primary and secondary montane forests, the note that the bird also forages among kitchen waste (in the same HBW entry) seems somewhat incongruous. His obituary was published in Nature. Quite possibly, this laughingthrush is now locally extinct in Switzerland or at least in Basel.

Thirteen Spoon-billed Sandpipers have arrived in England after spending sixty days in quarantine at Moscow Zoo. The birds were captured on their breeding grounds in Siberia and the hope is that they can be used to start a captive breeding program in an attempt to bring the species back from the brink. Unfortunately, these features that make island ecosystems so unique have also lead to a disproportionate number of extinct island birds relative to continental ecosystems. This bird was in serious trouble by the mid-19th century due to the adults being killed for food and young being taken for pets. Nests were in hollows in palm trees.
