Yellow-headed Blackbirds ( Xanthocephalus xanthocephalus ) are robin-sized blackbirds found in prairie and mountain meadow wetlands of the western and central United States and Canada. The Eurasian Blackbird Turdus merula having colonized the southern forests (Troodos and Paphos forests) since 1976 it is still increasing its range and population spreading even to the lower reaches of the forest.
Laight has recorded some 100 species here, including Slavonian (Horned) Grebe and Red-rumped Swallow (the first is a rare migrant/wintering species only, while the second one is an uncommon breeder). This species nests in colonies and may forage up to 6 miles away from breeding sites and the nearest mine pits are some 4-5 mi from here.
Wren, Blackbird, Song Thrush, Robin, Garden Warbler, Blackcap, Goldcrest, Treecreeper, Chiffchaff were all noted by 4.30, and we soon managed to add two more tricky species: Stonechat and Willow Warbler. This fen has breeding Marsh Harriers, and we saw at least three different birds, while Cuckoos called close by.
Yellow-billed Magpies are found just inland, and Tricolored Blackbirds can be found on Point Reyes (a legendary migrant trap) by the thousand in the fall. Gull-billed Terns breed in south San Diego Bay, along with Black Skimmers and several other tern species. We have a little bit of everything here. Good gulling in winter.
Apparently , the two main factors influencing double brooding are the individual quality of the breeder and the timing of the first clutch. Finally, in my own compound, just a few meters away from my apartment, Chinese Blackbirds are breeding – though without a lockdown, I am spending less time on them this year than last year.
