And of eggs and nests and birds on nests. She does, and her narrative serves as a role model for how to write about birds simply and knowledgeably; informing birds’ family stories with scientific facts and research findings. Cedar Waxwings exchange berries, carry nesting material, eggs. And of birds courting and mating.
I also want people to know that our understanding of birds’ mating habits are constantly changing and evolving…there is still a lot of research to be done here, and we will be learning a lot more in the years to come. After laying eggs, they have little to do with the upbringing of their chicks, leaving the male to handle things.
But it happened at that moment that a lot of what I was looking at was avian in nature: a few crows, some sparrows, blackbirds, and other run of the mill inner-ring suburb fliers and flitterers. Here’s some data from the famous research project of Manu, Peru, giving biomass in kilograms per hectare.
In some species accounts, notably Song Sparrow, this text reads as a carefully researched, finely detailed ornithological/historical essay. And, the 1996 volume includes information on nests and eggs, a topic not covered by the Peterson guide. Just to be sure, read the section on “Ruling Our the Non-Sparrow.”

To be honest, both the robin and the flycatchers shown above remind me of the easter eggs I hunted for as a child – the same strong colors in front of a green background, same time of the year (feel free to insert your own Proust Madeleine reference here) … Bluethroats apparently are good at imitating other birds.
