I was vacationing on Kennebago Lake, where my family has been coming every summer for nearly twenty years. White-throated Sparrow. Not impeded by branches or the need to bushwhack, we could paddle right up close to the sound, in this case the merry singing of a White-throated Sparrow. Kayaking is an amazing way to bird.

My only thought of why it took me over two minutes to see it right in front of me can only be attributed to light-headedness from the high altitude. A quick sidetrack.

Late March in my home borough of New York City is typically when Eastern Phoebe , Pine Warbler , American Woodcock , Osprey , and other early migrants are back but many of our wintering birds, like Snow Goose and American Tree Sparrow , are still sticking around. In some instances the names old names were given to new birds of familiar types in error ( American Robins are actually thrushes, and New World sparrows are really buntings), but in many other instances these names were applied to entirely new families and genera. Another long time mystery bird, or pair of birds, were the piopio.

To be fair, I could and should have also grabbed The Shorebird Guide for the Greenshank and Collin’s Bird Guide, 2nd edition for both birds, but the Nat Geo was right there next to me, where your favorite field guides should be.). As in the first edition, all bird images for all species are drawn facing or flying right. In the case of hawks, this often means flying up and to the right, and in the case of White-breasted Nuthatch, this means facing down and to the right. But, always to the right. I wish we had the equivalent for color.
