The festival is now in its 16 th year in the quaint-yet-vibrant town of Fallon, Nevada (about an hour east of Reno), and it draws on the wide array of birds that flock to the area during spring migration. The town is actually nicknamed “The Oasis of Nevada.”) Yellow-headed Blackbird was another lifer for me, and omnipresent.

I didn’t travel much this year, with a June family trip to California and Nevada and a four-day trip in July to Trinidad and Tobago being my only opportunities to get birds not in the northeastern United States. Checking out Red-breasted Blackbirds at the Aripo Agricultural Research Station. Red-breasted Blackbird.

By 7:30 am we made our first stop with just enough light to take photos and picked up our first three new birds for the trip, Chilean Mockingbird, Austral Blackbird, and Long-tailed Meadowlark. From here we drove back down to take the road to Sierra Nevada Valley. Chilean Mockingbird. Moutain Caracara.

I was fortunate to rack up a number of lifers in 2013, both at home and abroad ( Varied Thrush in Washington, Brewer’s Blackbirds in California, Burrowing Owl in the Nevada desert). She blogged about it here. But by far the best was witnessing the autumn migration of Sandhill Cranes.

There are whole regions of the country from the Great Lakes west to Nevada where official hawkwatching is essentially non-existent, due to lack of migration density, so If you live in one of the places it is possible to see this magical migration you need to grab that opportunity.
