But here in 2020, the eastern half is also suffering the effects of drought — leaving it shallow enough to keep a fair number of Teals, Pintails, and Shovelers happy. There were large flocks of Brown-headed Cowbirds and Yellow-headed Blackbirds , with some Red-winged Blackbirds in the mix. Just part of one flock.

I got sunburned, Desi suffered a nasty cut over his eye, and all three of us sneezed and sniffled and hacked and coughed with colds. Ditto for the Blackbird Bakery on Bainbridge Island, Fins Coastal Cuisine in Port Townsend, and Ezell’s Chicken in Seattle. Striking up conversations in the street and not asking for money nice.

After a night at the Point Reyes hostel and a long walk to Limantour Beach the next morning, Katherine and I drove into Point Reyes Station for a breakfast of buttermilk blueberry scones at the excellent Bovine Bakery , where the Brewer’s Blackbirds ( Euphagus cyanocephalus ) outside gathered around us and begged for crumbs.

However, there are those species which have a hard time bringing attention to themselves such as Yellow-shouldered Blackbird , Giant Nuthatch , and Vinaceous-breasted Parrot. As is most often the case, lowland rainforest habitats suffered the most with an almost complete loss of this habitat.

Birders wanted the boat to go out but were concerned that the weather could postpone the trip or, perhaps worse, almost postpone the trip, which would mean a long day suffering in rough seas. Identified for sure were a Great Blue Heron , American Goldfinches , and a Red-winged Blackbird. More on that in a moment.).

Just from the two roads (one toll, one free) that cross the lake, and a small part of its total shore, on a good day in December or January you can count on seeing thousands of Northern Shovelers , Northern Pintails , and Yellow-headed Blackbirds. Which can also be said for the Yellow-headed Blackbirds.
