I was going to change Animal Person to Vegan Atheist 40+ Parenting and come back to blogging. Doesn't have a ring to it at all, but a young man at Whole Foods yesterday called himself an "animal person" while ordering a roast beef wrap and I thought: Note to self-must change blog name if going to resume blogging.

She knows going vegan is the right thing to do. She has said she wants to go vegan and knows it's the right thing to do, but she doesn't want to replace the problems she already has with new ones (she sort of has a handle on them now). Help Cristy go vegan. She is very thin and has a history of gut-related issues.

There I was, going to lunch with newbie vegan, Cristy, who is terrified of restaurants since going vegan. S: There's only one thing on our menu that's vegan. Balderdash, I tell you! Oh, the humanity!

Despite Violet's diabetes, she was never the problem.

The PF Chang update, in case you haven't seen the response from the restaurant , is thus, once you incorporate the actual experiences of vegans who have gone through something similar with the restaurant: If you don't eat non-vegan sugar, there aren't many options. Everyone has their line in the sand. Publishing is a numbers game.

Other than being a vegan, the most important actions you can take to help animals who are used for food are: Give generously to organizations that help those sentient nonhumans directly, such as Peaceful Prairie Sanctuary , Maple Farm Sanctuary , Poplar Spring Animal Sanctuary and Eastern Shore Sanctuary. Give generously to Tribe of Heart.

This is an interesting post from Econista, a "guerilla environmentalist and fashionista" blog that, sadly, is not often updated. For example, here's Econista's take on Natalie Portman's vegan shoe line. Recently Natalie Portman appeared on Bravo's Project Runway hocking her vegan shoe line Te Cesan.

I could be reading into this, but it does appear that there's some discomfort on the part of non-vegans when they look through the calendar and I tell them the story. And when you're checking out at the health food store with your cans and bag of vegan dog food, how could that not be a seedy opportunity?

Yesterday's lessons learned were primarily about blogging. And how, for the love of God, people have got so stop saying things like Vegan Before 6! See Vegan Between Meals for more). But, probably because I was blogging daily and there wasn't great fodder daily, I expanded into other areas. Today they're about language.

Meat eaters (and even some lacto-ovo-vegetarians) think this way because they mistakenly think that vegans eat an austere, bland diet consisting mostly of twigs and seeds with occasionally some plain tasteless tofu thrown in. If you want to see just how delectable vegan food can be, check out the Walking the Vegan Line blog.

Oprah Winfrey goes vegan for 21 days. See both Oprah's blog and this story for details. On Day 1 of her 21-day experiment with veganism, Oprah aptly asked: "How can you say you're trying to spiritually evolve, without even a thought about what happens to the animals whose lives are sacrificed in the name of gluttony?"

This post is inspired by a thought-provoking piece on the Provoked blog (clearly a good name for a blog!) Is a vegan's efforts at advocacy worth more than a vegetarian's or even a meat eater's if they happen to agree on the same issue? Economics, science, literature, film, politics, law, etc.

I've been out of every loop I used to be in because my work outside of veganism and animal rights came a-calling in a most critical way. I haven't been able to blog, or, I haven't made it a priority. And my disappointment over vegan-on-vegan hate has found an unlikely peer in atheist-on-agnostic (and -on-believer) hate.

The one that caught my eye as useful for vegans and the animal rights community is: WEBook, a venture-backed start-up in New York, allows people to collaborate on writing books and is working on new ways to let readers give writers real-time feedback on their work. While spending hours in the car I've been thinking about various issues related to sentient nonhumans, animal rights and veganism. Being vegan because you want to live as nonviolently as possible and you don't want to contribute to violence and you don't want to respond to violence with violence is admirable to some, though refusing to support the defense of sentient nonhumans when you probably would if they were humans bothers me. I have such a difficult time giving up the notion that I can buy or not buy my way out of a problem, and that my one vote to buy or not buy really does count because if more people did it we'd develop the mythical critical mass that would indeed change the way things are or are done.

I want to talk about why we shouldn't be using animals and that it's infinitely easier to be a vegan than it was 20 years ago. So there are more vegans and fewer animals used by humans, right? Part of the reason my interest in blogging daily has waned is because of the infighting and mean-spiritedness that can be read.

Every day, some people make the switch to entirely plant-based vegan diets. How many people know, e.g., that University of Chicago researchers have reported that by switching to a vegan diet, a person can reduce her/his carbon footprint by 1.5 While by no means optimistic, I'm certainly less pessimistic than Ausubel.
