Male Sword-billed Hummingbird at Yanacocha Reserve The Sword-billed Hummingbird ( Ensifera ensifera ) is a South American hummingbird found at high elevations (1700-3600m) in the Andes from Venezuela to Bolivia. This monotypic species stands apart from all other birds as the only one with a bill longer than its body.
The new birds inhabit the southern portion of the Amazon, some only in Brazil but others in Bolivia and Peru as well. The ornithologists considered plumage, voice, and genetics in making their determinations; birds had to differ from known species in in at least two of those qualities to be considered new. Of the bunch, 14 are passerines.
It is a very small antpitta that lives in Ecuador, Colombia, Peru, Venezuela and Bolivia. This antpitta is found in southern Ecuador (near Peru) and curiously also inside the Puluahua Crater which is my residence near Quito in northern Ecuador.

Florisuga mellivora , as the White-necked Jacobin is known to Latin enthusiasts, is found from Mexico to Bolivia, and its huge range and population make it a Species of Least Concern to BirdLife International. And, of course, its namesake white neck, though most would probably consider the gleaming white patch on the nape more of a collar.
The three major strongholds of the Hyacinth Macaw are Pantanal region encompassing parts of Brazil, Bolivia and Paraguay, the Cerrado in interior, and Brazil’s eastern Amazon Basin region. This gull inhabits the high Andean plateau of Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia, Chile, and Argentina at elevations ranging from 3300 to 4400 m (10827 to 14436 feet). The Andean Gull could not be further from this general association. It normally lives as far from the sea as can be. A few vagrant birds are reported at coastal lagoons and estuaries.

More dramatically memorable is Dunn’s experience in Bolivia, where he hoped to travel to Chalalan Lodge, an eco-lodge run by the local indigenous population, but ends up facing the 2019 election protests with blockades and a threat of violence at every road leaving the city.
Bird as much as you want from Mexico to Bolivia, and you could easily never see or hear one for years. Not only does it look nicer (it looks more like a quail-dove), it’s also super tough to see. In neotropical birding circles, the ability of this ground-dove to avoid detection is pretty much legendary.

As an avian national symbol, the Andean Condor belongs to all four countries that make up the long, mountainous Pacific coast of South America: Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, and Chile – as well as neighboring but landlocked Bolivia.
