The field guide I always bring as a paper book, and there’s no substitute for snooping through the pages. Again, I prefer paper over e-books. Some birders might consider a voice recorder and a speaker (but I prefer not to use playback). Don’t forget all the cables, chargers, backup batteries and international electrical adapters!
I for one couldn’t wait to get my hands on this book, loved it at first sight, and appreciate it even more after a month’s study. Our dear friends at Princeton University Press , home of so many indispensable and inspired birding books, has graciously offered three copies of the new Crossley ID Guide for 10,000 Birds readers.
The first twenty-nine pages of the book, after the acknowledgements, table of contents, and other prefatory materials, are devoted to the Pantanal and Cerrado and the need to conserve these two endangered biomes. The one major drawback to this book is actually an intended feature and not a glitch.

YourBirdOasis.com Mar 12th, 2011 at 5:57 pm This post reminds me of a great book I read many years ago and imagine others that frequent 10000birds would also enjoy. The book is called “Bird of Life, Bird of Death&# by Jonathan Evan Maslow…check it out if you like birding travelogue natural history type writing.
And that's when I get e-mails like this: Dear Mary I’m Caroline and I’m one of the Supporter Services team members for Compassion in World Farming. Having read your blogs I thought you might like to hear about Compassion in World Farming’s Bake with Compassion fundraising week. But that was back in 2006. Eat More Veal?
I rushed down to aid with what I could give, taking several spare bird books, DVD’s, bird T-shirts and Birdman Productions hats along with 2 pairs of my “extra” binoculars. The second responded as I would- with immediate concern and compassion. The devastation is exactly what you would expect after a tornado.

Charles Harper’s Birds & Word s is the signature book of this bird and nature artist’s career. I love cardinals, real and illustrated, but the wonderful thing about this book is that you can also enjoy Harper’s other images, like Western Tanager and Eastern Kingbird. These are good examples of Harper’s art and text.
His instrument is a silver horn, which he winds in the most solitary places…One feels that perhaps the wood thrush has more compass and power, if he would only let himself out, but, on the whole he comes a little short of the pure, serene, hymn-like strain of the hermit. Surely then, if ever, one listens to the music of the stars.
Perfect if part of your family (say, your spouse) want to read a book on the beach, while you take your camera and bins and look for plovers, reddish egrets, tricolored heron, and the occasional redknot, longbilled curlew… The view of the palm warblers feeding on the sand were also quite spectacular for me! Recapping the quiz … I recently purchased a new book on birds and used it as the single source for this week’s quiz. The book is from 2005 called “Identify Yourself, The 50 Most Common Birding Identification Challenges”. Showing a huge amount of faith, I closed my eyes and opened the book. Thanks for visiting!

I can’t get a good feel for them (I still prefer my book version). With ipods and iphones you can carry a lot more information than multiple books. Digital guides still have to reach a better caliber (in my opinion) to really make books obsolete however. While there are a few (nat geo, sibley, etc.)
Though I haven't been able to surf the Internet that much recently, I have found it difficult to avoid discussion of Foer's book. In fact, both books glorify small farms (though Foer is more selective), and both have the support of people who create and kill animals. Tags: Books Ethics. That has to be good, I tell myself.
Burnout, Compassion Fatigue, Emotional Exhaustion these are all familiar topics to those of us who spend our time helping animals. Jeff Masson's new book didn't cause me to unravel, but I did learn a lot about our friends and coevolvers, Canis familiaris. This Masson book ( here are all of them) is for Benjy, who was supposed to be a service dog but who was, shall we say, less than enthusiastic about the career choice that was made for him.
