National Audubon Society Birds of North America: A Guide Review

The new series was masterminded by Chanticleer founder Paul Steiner, who was lauded on his death 19 years later for his “brilliant idea of creating bird guides with photographs” and organizing them visually. I am particularly happy to see that the bird communication section includes recent research on singing female birds.

Mrs Pankhurst’s Purple Feather–A Book Review

Fitting, since New York City and London were the centers of the millinery trade. As a librarian and women’s studies scholar, I greatly appreciate the research. Preferably, they should be wearing colors of purple, white, and gold, the branded hues of their movement. This is where Boase excels. This is good stuff.

Elizabeth spent two years in Australia, traveling there with John and her oldest son, then living with acquaintances and relatives in Tasmania, Sydney, and Yarrundi while John traipsed across the continent shooting birds, collecting skins. It’s a clunky system that only works IF you know the full name of the bird you are researching.
