The guides bore the Audubon Society name, were published by Knopf and distributed by Random House, but they were actually conceived and produced by an outfit called Chanticleer Press and they became a publishing sensation.

My friend Ian had purchased Richard ffrench’s classic A Guide to the Birds of Trinidad & Tobago just before we left, the third edition, hot off the presses. A little bit of research when I got home unraveled the ways of publishers here and in Great Britain. The bird guide question was a conundrum.

Their populations, plus those of other species that ‘wore’ the coveted long, colorful feathers used for women’s fashionable hats, were being dangerously depleted by hunters intent on feeding the millinery industry. As a librarian and women’s studies scholar, I greatly appreciate the research. This is where Boase excels.

Not only is the book reproduction cleaner and the colors brighter, it is slightly cropped so that the bird jumps off the page at you, but also cropping out the species name. As I said before, the book plates utilize the species names used in the original books and drawings.
