As always, the woods around the marsh were busy with breeders setting up shop. I said good-bye to Wurtsboro and headed east and then north, making my way to the Town of Wallkill in Ulster County, in particular, to Shawangunk Grasslands National Wildlife Refuge where I hoped to see Grasshopper Sparrows and other grassland breeders.

Cypriot Delights: Part I

First recorded breeding on the island in 2013, this dove is now both widespread and common. Today they are a Cypriot success story, for they have established themselves at many locations, and even breed in the middle of roundabouts in the bustling town of Larnaka. Hoopoes are common breeding birds.

Anna’s, Rufous and Calliope: Hummingbirds of the West

She is the latest of our local breeders, not nesting usually until mid-May. She will begin breeding in April. The female is the earliest breeder of all these species, arriving on breeding grounds shortly after the males in November. The male is the only hummingbird in North America with a rufous back.

They were probably not preparing to go south.
