Soon we were out of the protected harbour and into choppier waters, and here I have to say I suffered for about two hours from the dreaded affliction known as sea-sickness. It is also restricted as a breeder to the north of North Island. The Grey-faced Petrel has all dark plumage with a lighter area around the face.

Only four species breed in Britain – the Yellowhammer, Reed Bunting, Corn Bunting and Cirl Bunting, but there are rather more in Europe, of which my favourite is the Black-headed Bunting. This is a Balkan special, and a bird I know well from Greece, Bulgaria and Cyprus. It’s easy to explain its upturn in fortunes.

The Red-flanked Bluetail is also the subject of an otherwise relatively unremarkable paper , but it uses the interesting term “autumn obesity” Maybe this Marsh Sandpiper also suffers from autumn obesity? The Eurasian Hobby was another notable raptor of the month.

Apparently , the two main factors influencing double brooding are the individual quality of the breeder and the timing of the first clutch. If you are suffering from depression, you just have found another reason to go birding. Some hoopoe individuals must like chicks a lot, even resorting to double brooding. Who are these weirdoes?
