Yellow-headed Blackbirds ( Xanthocephalus xanthocephalus ) are robin-sized blackbirds found in prairie and mountain meadow wetlands of the western and central UnitedStates and Canada. You see, the males arrive in the breeding grounds before the females and establish a territory that they defend aggressively against other males.
Birding in Mexico is not like birding in the UnitedStates… especially when it comes to interpreting unusual sightings. Howell does not place the White-tailed Hawk anywhere near Morelia, but I have seen it in every cuadrant of the city, and know for a fact that it breeds near the church I pastor.
Those of us in the UnitedStates are celebrating Memorial Day Weekend, normally a time to gather with friends and family for barbecues, beach outings, and other fun group activities. Perhaps for those of us in the northeastern UnitedStates the number of birds this weekend has been a bit of a disappoint though.
Yeah, I certainly won’t be shedding any tears for now ex-bird breeder LaSandra Walter , who had her birds taken from her as part of a plea deal after birds were found emaciated and in filthy conditions in her home. &# My whole life was based on my bird business,&# she whined.
Unless you’re a big fan of your local breeding birds, you’ll find that this is the most boring time of the birding year. Figure out your quarry before you step out and you’ll have a better chance of finding what you seek. Go Where the Birders Are Notice how I didn’t say to go where the birds are.
Many birders are aware that the Caribbean specialties, tropical seabird colonies, and even the menagerie of exotics are a unique feature of this part of the UnitedStates. In fact, it was the explosive expansion of introduced Eurasian Collared-Dove which lead to the range expansion of Cooper’s Hawks in urban Miami as breeders.
The grasslands have been popping off with breeders for well over a month, but the snow is just now giving way to lush alpine meadows and rocky tundras. This is my time of year to explore thin air and look for unique Colorado breeders. Their range of breeding is literally only very southern Wyoming to very northern New Mexico.
We then switch to Andy McWilliam, a genial investigator with the National Wildlife Crime Unit, who combines the skill of a life doing police work with a deep appreciation for the importance of Great Britain’s wildlife laws. And, some background on those laws, both in the United Kingdom and the UnitedStates.
About half of all breeding Wandering Albatross nest on the Prince Edward Islands. Well, cats are just as successful breeders as mice and soon there were thousands of cats that sought out prey bigger than mice and began to wipe out the native seabird population. Which makes it a haven for seabirds….and and seabirders.
The Shift: Instead of buying your new friend from a pet store or breeder, adopt one from a shelter. Save $$: Up to $500 or more depending on animal and breed. Shift-It Tip: If you’re set on a purebred dog or cat, buy one from a rescue association instead of getting a pedigree from a breeder. Early Adopter. Incredible Bulk.
Though the third-most densely populated county in the UnitedStates (as of the 2010 census, thank you Wikipedia), about 25% of Bronx land is open, public space. The authors’ detailed delineation of problems with the accuracy of NYC breeding bird surveys or with the limits of historical writings may test a reader’s patience.
There is no place that compares to Maine with its rocky shorelines, freezing waters populated by wintering alcids, offshore islands filled with nesting Atlantic Puffins, mixed and boreal forests (the most forested state in the U.S., we learn) that are home to coveted boreal species, breeding wood-warblers, and two species of Grouse.
Greater Flamingos are considered cooperative breeders as fledglings are raised in a creche, in which large numbers of young are watched by multiple non-breeding adult greater flamingos. It is one of the largest flying birds in the world and seems to be capable of social learning ( source ).
The dog days of July, when birders desperately seek out south-bound shorebirds, odd breeding records, or anything else to keep themselves from losing their minds in a lousy birding time in the northeastern UnitedStates, is not my favorite time of year to bird. Either way, life isn’t easy for a young bird.
I knew I would not be seeing the bird in its rosy-breasted breeding plumage, but somehow seeing the bird in all its forms helped crystallize its appearance in my head. or birds that look very different in their breeding and non-breeding plumages (Shorebirds! I studied it. Sadly, I still did not see the bird.
It goes without saying that our three breeding species of mergansers in the UnitedStates are amongst the most brilliantly colored birds we have. Common , Hooded and Red-breasted Mergansers all breed here, but Red-breasted is the more northerly of the group. Mainly due to the open water situation we have here.
