She is the latest of our local breeders, not nesting usually until mid-May. The female is the earliest breeder of all these species, arriving on breeding grounds shortly after the males in November. Here you can see the female collecting nesting material. She will begin breeding in April.

His collection was impressive and overwhelmingly illegal so he will remain unnamed too. He did know all the little roads in the area and as he wasn’t a trapper but a breeder we asked him to show us the way. We were introduced to a local specialist, but this gentleman turned out to be interested in caged birds.

In New York State , however, the Short-eared Owl is considered an endangered species and it has likely been extirpated as a breeder in several of its former strongholds. This laughingthrush is a cooperative breeder – nestlings are fed by all members of a group, often 6-12 (not just 2 as in Wham!): “A female may share a nest with another, and 3 or more adults may take turns incubating the eggs and feeding the chicks.” (Note to those readers who do not know Wham!: ” ( source ).

Fortunately, my own garden is currently being visited by a nice collection of resident species. So go ahead and take your summer breeders back. But I am sure I have seen my last examples of these species until the fall; especially since a total lockdown was just decreed for my state of Michoacán. They will return to me soon enough.

However, the lockdown forces me to go deeper and deeper into my photo collection, if I want to write anything at all. It has been more than 5 years since I last went to Australia, and I was even less of a qualified bird photographer then than I am now. And that seems to be the only vaguely satisfying thing left to do at the moment.
