An immature White-tailed Eagle. The same eagle? While Black Terns are regular migrants and even rare breeders (only 2 to 5 pairs nation-wide), White-winged are ill-numbered migrants and very irregular breeders (the last breeding was a decade ago). Soon I see a huge bird again. No, this time it’s a Black Stork !
Living near the Sacramento River and its many lakes and tributaries makes it even more likely to see the incredible fish hawk or sea eagle we call the Osprey ( Pandion haliaetus ). Most of the Osprey breeding in North America are migratory, only Florida, the Caribbean and Baja California host non-migratory breeders 1.
The only unstreaked pipit around here and a characteristic breeder of sand dunes is the Tawny Pipit and this one shows well, holding to the grass edge. Wait, those fingers, the upper one is not a buzzard… a small eagle, it’s a dark morph Booted Eagle ! The story is even worse with the vulnerable Eastern Imperial Eagle.
The proprietor of our ecolodge guides my small group of birders up a steep slope where we see, just at the point where a scope view deteriorates into pixels, a huge bird—a Chaco Eagle, also known as a Crowned Eagle—on a huge nest. We are cautioned to keep the location of the eagle a secret. It would be nice to be there now.
If you have always wondered what the minimum anesthetic concentration for isoflurane and sevoflurane for the Crested Serpent-eagle is, science has an answer. While serpent means large snake, the Crested Serpent-eagle also eats frogs, as this video shows.
Second, every raptor we encountered was identified as Tawny Eagle. He did know all the little roads in the area and as he wasn’t a trapper but a breeder we asked him to show us the way. And yes, Sable Antilope is very cool, but birds are sub-zero cool! And it was birds we came for, so his customer service wasn’t great.
Many robins, eagles and finches later, he ended up at university studying various biology things and wrote a thesis on vertebrate biogeography in southern African forests. In the case of Acorn Woodpeckers, they are cooperative breeders (as with many other polygynandrous species), which seems to predispose species to polygynandry.
In my case, I had one easy and three more difficult ( Syrian Woodpecker , Imperial Eagle , Great Bustard and Saker Falcon ). Imperial Eagle still in Fruška Gora National Park? [No, Search for my target species (i.e. those I haven’t seen in my life, or in the country). Search for “local special”. r=RS&yr=all&m= ).
Back to the Mikri Prespa , where mostly Dalmatian, with two White Pelicans among them, were circling, while one Short-toed Snake Eagle glided across. For longest lists, go there in May when migrants are still passing while the local breeders are active and visible. Dalmatian and White Pelicans (White = the black ones).
Sadly, I missed out on seeing White-tailed Eagles and Harlequin Ducks. Its layout is intuitive, grouping birds into six categories by habitat and habits; it covers all 77 known regular breeders with additional information on other known visitors (376 total).
There are a lot of predators drawn to such abundance with Eurasian Marsh Harriers and Greater Spotted Eagles known to take chicks from the heronry. It was thought that later nests with smaller clutches were either replacement clutches from a failed nest or from low-quality breeders. Eggs often fall victim to the ubiquitous House Crow.
This is a serious issue around Eilat and seems to affect local resident breeders more than migrants. In other words, we share a deep appreciation for the avian aspect of life, we smile together when we see a Booted Eagle or a trogon in beautiful light. All birders wear binoculars : No matter where you go, birders all wear binoculars.
And of course, two raptors that are a part of North American birding history: the Great Black Hawk of Portland and the Steller’s Sea-eagle of Boothbay Harbor and other local areas. (
The Mourning Dove is a prolific breeder. Reduces the risk of harming other wildlife, particularly Eagles and Condors, from getting sick and dying from lead consumption. She found the nest under the windshield wiper of her vehicle that was parked in her garage. Delivers devastating hydrostatic energy and shock to a game animal.
However, the appearance of a Peregrine or Booted Eagle “causes widespread panic at the colony, birds circling up high into the sky to avoid them”. The birds I saw there were most likely Asian breeders, for they don’t start to migrate north until March, by which time the European-breeding birds are already crossing the Mediterranean.
Sometimes they have to protect their catches from piratic African Fish Eagles who swoop down as soon as they that see a Saddle-bill has successfully caught a fish. Saddle-bills are more strictly restricted to wetland environments where they are adept at catching their own fish with their enormous upturned bills.
Eagle-eyed Pat spotted a Lesser Black-backed Gull in nonbreeding plumage and other birders that week noted a Thayer’s Gull (which we may have seen too–I mean, who expects Iceland Gull in April?). Multitudes, hundreds of Brown Pelicans and Terns–Least, Common, Foster’s, Sandwich, Royal, and Caspian.
The eagle-owls of the genus Bubo are all called “Uhu“. As a rule of thumb, with quite a number of exceptions, if the species sports feathery ears and is not an eagle-owls, it’s an “Eule“. You know, cavity breeders. I’d like to point out though that “owly“ is a poor translation.
