An immature White-tailed Eagle. The same eagle? While Black Terns are regular migrants and even rare breeders (only 2 to 5 pairs nation-wide), White-winged are ill-numbered migrants and very irregular breeders (the last breeding was a decade ago). Soon I see a huge bird again. No, this time it’s a Black Stork !

Osprey Love in Northern California

Living near the Sacramento River and its many lakes and tributaries makes it even more likely to see the incredible fish hawk or sea eagle we call the Osprey ( Pandion haliaetus ). Most of the Osprey breeding in North America are migratory, only Florida, the Caribbean and Baja California host non-migratory breeders 1.

Birding Deliblato Sands: What I have seen and what I haven’t

The only unstreaked pipit around here and a characteristic breeder of sand dunes is the Tawny Pipit and this one shows well, holding to the grass edge. Wait, those fingers, the upper one is not a buzzard… a small eagle, it’s a dark morph Booted Eagle ! The story is even worse with the vulnerable Eastern Imperial Eagle.

Second, every raptor we encountered was identified as Tawny Eagle. He did know all the little roads in the area and as he wasn’t a trapper but a breeder we asked him to show us the way. And yes, Sable Antilope is very cool, but birds are sub-zero cool! And it was birds we came for, so his customer service wasn’t great.
