Most of the breeders seemed to have departed already on their journeys south but he did enjoy a Barred Owl serenade in the wee hours of the morning two days in a row so the Barred Owl wins as his Best Bird of the Weekend. But we’re not confined to a wasteland of resident breeders just yet, are we? Near as I can tell, that horrific “huahhh” was coming from a Barred Owl apparently as confused about its evening’s itinerary as I was. Actually we couldn’t be seen, as it was still too dark, but we did hear a couple of birds to start the day: Tawny Owl and Cetti’s Warbler. We continued until well after sunset, but both Little Owl and Barn Owl eluded us, as did Grey Partridge. According to my phone, I’d walked close to 21,000 steps.

I haven’t yet been birding in Europe but whenever I occasionally skim a field guide about the birds on the other side of the Atlantic, I’m always encouraged to find that I’m already familiar with many species found over there, even though most of my birding experience has been limited to eastern North America. I remember the talking (Song?)

You’ll enjoy your earliest experiences of birding best if you allow the pros to do the heavy lifting for you: Let them find the birds and, more important, identify the birds for you. Only the ignorant expects to hit a hole in one first time out on the links or to throw all strikes as a beginner bowler.

I’m to the point that I wish all the Snowy Owls in the US this winter would head back north. There’s been some confusing info because Project SNOWStorm also captured and put a transmitter on a first winter female Snowy Owl around the same time in the same area. Many get their birds from breeders. Go home now!”

We have to figure out when the highest numbers of migrants coincide with resident breeders to increase the probabilities of breaking the previous record, or to at least hit your Big Day birding goal. Scouting can also turn up rare birds, fruiting and flowering trees, and maybe even an owl roost.
