They are very late breeders, as they feed their young on autumn migrants which they generally intercept out to sea. So too do Woodchat Shrikes, while Red-backed are only occasional breeders.

My Global Big (half-)Day, May 2022

While Black Terns are regular migrants and even rare breeders (only 2 to 5 pairs nation-wide), White-winged are ill-numbered migrants and very irregular breeders (the last breeding was a decade ago). By the end of the wood, there’s a small wetland, a huge bird above, one more White Stork? An immature White-tailed Eagle. The same eagle?

Birding Deliblato Sands: What I have seen and what I haven’t

The only unstreaked pipit around here and a characteristic breeder of sand dunes is the Tawny Pipit and this one shows well, holding to the grass edge. On the opposite side is a smallish falcon, obviously too short-tailed for a Common Kestrel, a Eurasian Hobby first comes to mind… but a male Red-footed Falcon on migration it turns out to be.

Andalucia’s City-Slicker Falcons

The kestrel colony is valued by the city of Seville: in recent years renovation work on the roof of the cathedral was suspended during the falcons’ breeding season. Prespa Lakes National Park, Greece: the largest Dalmatian Pelican colony in the world

The best bird was one lovely Common Chiffchaff that was very hard to locate in the thick crown of an old juniper tree, followed by one mysterious small falcon. For longest lists, go there in May when migrants are still passing while the local breeders are active and visible.
