The draft Bill proposes a new regime of annual inspections and fees for dog breeders. Fine Gael and rural Fianna Fáil backbenchers have called for greyhound breeders to be exempt because the industry is already regulated by existing legislation.

No playing with little white dogs, which isn't uncommon for greyhounds. He was 85 pounds (large for a greyhound), very muscular (odd for a greyhound) and spectacularly gorgeous, with Pharaoh Hound-like ears. Far more than a diabetic greyhound. No greyhounds were forced to race in the above photo.

Animals for research purposes are coming from municipal shelters, breeders and the greyhound trade. Unwanted farm dogs are another source. From the Herald Sun. In 2007, 394 dogs died during procedures for canine and human research. The fate of many others remains unclear.

Here's a great question I received via direct message on Twitter ( www.twitter.com/mary_martin ): "Do you think that even if Obama had adopted a shelter dog-it still may have caused a run on breeders? This is why I didn't campaign for a greyhound--it raises their profile. Would it matter?"

But I didn't campaign for a presidential greyhound for exactly the same reason Obama's decision was disappointing: it glorifies pure breed dogs. They can say that the puppy was needing to be re-homed, therefore it's like adopting from a rescue group.

I am a vegan who has adopted a diabetic greyhound who eats vegan food ( Natural Balance ), and who is adopting a boy from Russia. Having a biological child isn't supporting an exploitation industry and at odds with the goal of the cessation of animal use the way buying from a breeder or pet store is. And Adoption Awareness Month.
