Most of the breeders seemed to have departed already on their journeys south but he did enjoy a Barred Owl serenade in the wee hours of the morning two days in a row so the Barred Owl wins as his Best Bird of the Weekend. How about you? What was your best bird of the weekend?
I waited until now to post about the owl because the small size of the marsh at Plum Beach and the ease with which people can get into the marsh made it likely that if the owl’s location had been publicized it would have faced repeated disturbances from those hoping to see or photograph it. How cool is that?
But we’re not confined to a wasteland of resident breeders just yet, are we? Near as I can tell, that horrific “huahhh” was coming from a Barred Owl apparently as confused about its evening’s itinerary as I was. Hopefully, you’re still finding surprises. Saturday night, a surprise found me.
In the case of Acorn Woodpeckers, they are cooperative breeders (as with many other polygynandrous species), which seems to predispose species to polygynandry. The Snowy Owl account focuses on irruptions. The material on Boreal Owl is a wonderfully condensed account about the species’ sexual dimorphism and its relationship to breeding plus the link between the species’ cyclical abundance and the red-backed vole. Boreal Owl, p. Bohemian Waxwing, p. 206, photo by Brian E.
In the United States, the best bird action pretty much follows this pattern, although your mileage may vary: WINTER – waterfowl, owls, species from colder climes SPRING – migrants, particularly songbirds EARLY SUMMER – local breeders LATE SUMMER – shorebirds FALL – migrants, particularly raptors and songbirds Of course, (..)
The species is a cooperative breeder – chicks from previous breeding attempts help bringing up the next batch of chicks, like baby-sitting teenagers, though the latter are not related to the kids they babysit and also mainly do it for money, so I guess these two things are not really comparable at all. The one below is better.
All our six endemics have exclusive or partial populations living in forest habitats – exclusive being the Cyprus Jay Garrulus glandarius glazneri , Cyprus Coal Tit Periparus ater cypriotes , Cyprus Short-toed Treecreeper Certhia brachydactyla dorotheae and Cyprus Scops Owl Otus scops cyprius.
I didn’t spot a Spotted Owl , or catch a glimpse of a Marbled Murrelet – both North Cascades National Park breeders. When, in the smoky afternoons, we repaired down to the river to beat the heat, we found Spotted Sandpipers and Northern Rough-winged Swallows and the odd White-crowned Sparrow coming in for a drink.
It is also restricted as a breeder to the north of North Island. Go win a copy and you might get it before I get off my keister and write my review… Great Horned Owl Taking a Deer Leg Seriously, that really happens in this excellent video of a Great Horned Owl scavenging a deer carcass by Kirk Mona. Wicked, right?
Actually we couldn’t be seen, as it was still too dark, but we did hear a couple of birds to start the day: Tawny Owl and Cetti’s Warbler. We continued until well after sunset, but both Little Owl and Barn Owl eluded us, as did Grey Partridge. According to my phone, I’d walked close to 21,000 steps.
Like manky mallards, ganky geese display remarkable variety due to both the methodical manipulations of breeders and the variable volatility of the more natural kind of breeding. cygnoides ) ancestors. Feral geese run the gamut from pure white to almost entirely gray or brown. RECENT POSTS More Habitat for Snowy Plover? Wicked, right?
There are 240+ breeding birds in Serbia, but the colonial breeders and raptors were treated separately, and for a few dozen uncommon species there wasn’t enough data for computer modeling software. Once in the forest, attention should be diverted to the White-backed Woodpecker , also Eurasian Woodcock , Stock Dove and Ural Owl.
We have to figure out when the highest numbers of migrants coincide with resident breeders to increase the probabilities of breaking the previous record, or to at least hit your Big Day birding goal. Scouting can also turn up rare birds, fruiting and flowering trees, and maybe even an owl roost.
It was dark when we reached our accommodation in the hillside village of Pachna, where we were greeted by a duet of Scops Owls. According to the taxonomists, these weren’t regular Scops Owls ( Otus scops ) but the endemic Cyprus Scops Owl ( Otus cyprius ).
There are charismatic birds like Barrow’s Goldeneye, Evening Grosbeak, Red and White-winged Crossbills; mysterious seabirds like Leach’s Storm-Petrel; ‘little brown jobs’ like Winter Wren and Nelson’s Sparrow; a treasury of warbler species, 27 in all, many state breeders.
According to Wikipedia, “A l owl ife is a term for a person who is considered morally unacceptable by their community” The local Nanhui shrikes are well aware that the word “lowlife” has an owl hidden inside, and mark the appearance of owls in their territory with harsh protests. Not this one though.
Tolkien’s The Hobbit , the cantankerous Tawny Owl ( Strix aluco ) Old Brown from the Peter Rabbit tales by Beatrix Potter, and Kehaar, a Black-headed Gull ( Chroicocephalus ridibundus ) who was one of the few non-leporine characters in Watership Down by Richard Adams. I remember the talking (Song?)
Pel’s Fishing Owl, where were you? Greater Flamingos are considered cooperative breeders as fledglings are raised in a creche, in which large numbers of young are watched by multiple non-breeding adult greater flamingos. Great White Pelican is not just the name of a non-existent glam-rock band but also of a bird species.
I’m to the point that I wish all the Snowy Owls in the US this winter would head back north. There’s been some confusing info because Project SNOWStorm also captured and put a transmitter on a first winter female Snowy Owl around the same time in the same area. Many get their birds from breeders. Go home now!”
Other forest birds here include Sooty and Ruffed Grouse, Spotted and Barred Owls, Vaux’s Swift, Gray Jay, Pacific Wren, American Dipper, and Varied Thrush. Riparian areas and springs can yield Lawrence’s Goldfinch , and Brown-crested Flycatcher is a local breeder. Convict Lake, CA. The Sierras. Fall through spring.
So, I could capture it in all its owlish glory, complete with fake eyes at the back and nicely illustrating the capability of the owl to turn its head by almost 180 degrees in each direction. Common Cuckoo is a fascinating bird, an obligate parasitic breeder that employs numerous strategies, including fraud and murder, to survive.
You see, in German we have three distinct words for different groups of owls. The eagle-owls of the genus Bubo are all called “Uhu“. As a rule of thumb, with quite a number of exceptions, if the species sports feathery ears and is not an eagle-owls, it’s an “Eule“. You know, cavity breeders.

Another Nanhui trip also brought a Northern Boobook , which eBird nicely describes as a “slender brown owl with comically expressive golden eyes” While one would think that such a fierce-looking bird mainly lives off larger prey, this is not the case. It did not seem to bother the owl much though. Oh, the excitement.
