The park is managed for the benefit of the wildlife and made accessible for visitors with a footpath along the lakeshore and out onto spits that allow a closer approach to the heronry. It was thought that later nests with smaller clutches were either replacement clutches from a failed nest or from low-quality breeders.

This area includes Arcata Marsh and Wildlife Sanctuary, part of Audubon’s Humboldt Bay Important Bird Area (IBA). Heading west on highway 255 around the north end of Arcata Marsh and Wildlife Sanctuary, we drove to the Humboldt Bay jetty in search of the Rock Sandpiper ( Calidris ptilocnemis ).
