In honor of fall, and of the Chipping Sparrow that just smacked itself (thankfully not too hard) against my balcony window, here’s a blast from the past: Oct. That more-or-less covers a vast range – both metaphorically and literally, as the yellower birds are eastern breeders and the more whitish ones hail from the west.
A few Eurasian Tree Sparrows land by my car as I am scanning for Purple and Squacco Herons , Pygmy Cormorants and Black-necked Grebes in their brilliant breeding plumage. Driving with open windows (to hear the birds) becomes unbearable and I am heading out of this fish farm. Watching carefully, yes, not one, but two.
Once I stepped out of the car the sightings piled up quickly: Grasshopper Sparrow , American Kestrel , Savannah Sparrow , Willow Flycatcher , Eastern Meadowlark. And then, only a few yards away, a Henslow’s Sparrow was found singing as well. The sweet song of Eastern Meadowlarks is pleasant enough.
As always, the woods around the marsh were busy with breeders setting up shop. In addition to the Veery I saw or heard a pair of Yellow-billed Cuckoos , some cooperative Eastern Kingbirds , Swamp Sparrows , Warbling Vireos , Wood Thrush , Cedar Waxwings , a Worm-eating Warbler , and, well, you get the idea: it was awesome!
Laurent Fournier Mar 17th, 2011 at 11:49 am Would the white throated sparrow qualify for this? In the case of Acorn Woodpeckers, they are cooperative breeders (as with many other polygynandrous species), which seems to predispose species to polygynandry. Laurent, I cannot find anything on White-throated Sparrows being polygynandrous.
Sure, Miami and the Florida Keys do not boast any endemics ( ‘Cape Sable’ Seaside Sparrow is close) at the species level. In fact, it was the explosive expansion of introduced Eurasian Collared-Dove which lead to the range expansion of Cooper’s Hawks in urban Miami as breeders.
Spring migration flies by – literally – rather quickly in the northeast but the closeness of the Adirondacks means that although all those boreal-breeding warblers, kinglets, thrushes, and sparrows disappear from my local patch by late May, many of them haven’t gone very far. of Birmingham Michigan have released Piping Plover Pilsner.
When, in the smoky afternoons, we repaired down to the river to beat the heat, we found Spotted Sandpipers and Northern Rough-winged Swallows and the odd White-crowned Sparrow coming in for a drink. I didn’t spot a Spotted Owl , or catch a glimpse of a Marbled Murrelet – both North Cascades National Park breeders.
Migration hasn’t really kicked in, the breeders aren’t tied to breeding territories any more, and it is hot and sweaty outside. Sparrows are missing; wood-warblers vamoose. Nothing is quite as much of a downer to a birder than the summer doldrums. Uncomfortable weather and a lack of birds make birders grumpy.
whose occupants have already left for Africa, but a clump of elaborate closed nests of Spanish Sparrows hang underneath it. Checking the birds on the stork’s nest, I found both House and Spanish Sparrows. For longest lists, go there in May when migrants are still passing while the local breeders are active and visible.
Way back on the first day of March, Doug, who is a good birder and a decent guy despite his Brooklyn roots, and I were exploring Plum Beach, a location you will recall from the absurdly cooperative Clapper Rails and Nelson’s Sparrows that I digiscoped last year.
The species is a cooperative breeder – chicks from previous breeding attempts help bringing up the next batch of chicks, like baby-sitting teenagers, though the latter are not related to the kids they babysit and also mainly do it for money, so I guess these two things are not really comparable at all. ” Hurray for science.
But first, some of the expected species: No, I am not going to sing the praises of the over-abundant House Sparrows, which love to nest in my garden, or the more pleasing but all-too-abundant Inca Doves. These birds, like their Brown-headed cousins, are parasitic breeders.
Mid-June has so much to offer in the temperate zones, with breeders in one half of the world and migrants in the other. Corey’s Best Bird of the Weekend was a Barn Swallow that kept him company in a bird blind while Seaside Sparrows sang and Common Terns hunted in Wildwood, NJ. And to those of you in the polar zones, just why ?
By the time February rolls around, Swallow-tailed Kites are making an appearance while most of the rest of the country is still looking at waterfowl and winter sparrows. In January, the first Purple Martins are already arriving. Birds at sites such as small airports linger until the end of August.
Everything is new, and even the pigeons or sparrows flying around the airport make an exciting first for your country list. This species is sadly declining in Western Europe, the last breeders disappeared these last few weeks and we only get occasional winter visitors; Centa fish farm ( S49396841 ). This one was even singing!
Like manky mallards, ganky geese display remarkable variety due to both the methodical manipulations of breeders and the variable volatility of the more natural kind of breeding. cygnoides ) ancestors. Feral geese run the gamut from pure white to almost entirely gray or brown.
It is also restricted as a breeder to the north of North Island. In contrast the large Black Petrels (also known as Parkinson’s Petrels outside of New Zealand) are ornery birds that demand attention as they float about the boat. In spite of their large size they are actually the smallest of New Zealand’s Procellaria petrels.
When we factor in a precarious trip punctuated with such hazards as stalking, demon-flight Peregrines , trigger happy humans, missing habitats, and other nasty situations, maybe those non-breeders are the smart ones? After starting the morning with an unsuccessful search for Rusty Sparrow in Orotina, we hit three main shorebird sites.
So, let’s talk more about the Harris’s Sparrow. This big, chunky sparrow is one of Canada’s few endemic breeders (Wikipedia says the only one, but I trust Cornell more.) This genus contains some of my favorite sparrows, although it is hard to put my finger on why. Unlike all other U.S.
I photographed this bird from a public footpath on the Dorset coast, where these rare buntings have recently started breeding again Cirl buntings are late breeders, as they feed their young principally on grasshoppers. A Dorset Cirl Bunting , with grasshoppers for his chicks. As far as I am aware, no other bunting is polygamous.
Seaside Sparrows were singing on both sides and occasionally popped up to give us a view before diving deep back into the Spartina grass, hopefully getting ready to nest. Seaside Sparrow. At the end of the road, we found two Nelson’s Sparrows who quickly flew out to a tiny bit of land in the channel. Eastern Meadowlark.
There are charismatic birds like Barrow’s Goldeneye, Evening Grosbeak, Red and White-winged Crossbills; mysterious seabirds like Leach’s Storm-Petrel; ‘little brown jobs’ like Winter Wren and Nelson’s Sparrow; a treasury of warbler species, 27 in all, many state breeders.
And yes, sparrows in areas with polluted air are less healthy. For those males who pride themselves on being good karaoke singers, it may be pleasing to hear that among male Japanese Thrushes, males breeding with two females tended to have more various trills than monogamous male breeders ( source ).
Species order follows the AOU Checklist of North American Birds up to the 2015 supplement (so warblers come before sparrows), with a variation– certain subspecies are treated as full species (Eurasian Teal, Western Willet, Audubon’s Warblers, Red Fox Sparrow, and more). . Eaton, and John Kuerzi.
This leaves Shanghai in June with basically just the year-round species and the summer breeders, maybe with a few added ultra-lazy individuals of migratory species. The Black-naped Oriole is one of the most attractive summer breeders in Shanghai. Such as the Black-winged Cuckooshrike.
Other specialties include Bobolink , Sandhill Crane , Black Tern , Pinyon Jay , Juniper Titmouse , Bohemian Waxwing (rare) , Northern Shrike , Black-backed Woodpecker and American Tree Sparrow. Riparian areas and springs can yield Lawrence’s Goldfinch , and Brown-crested Flycatcher is a local breeder.
Now, there are a few obvious uses of bird names that I really needn’t cover, like our ambivalence towards the house sparrow. Its nickname “Spatz” is one of our most common terms of endearment, yet “Dreckspatz” translates to dirt sparrow and describes a person with questionable body hygiene.
