Of our migrant breeders the Hoopoe Upupa epops along with the Turtle Dove Streptopelia turtur , European Nightjar Caprimulgus europaeus , Olivaceous Warbler Hippolais pallida , Masked Shrike Lanius nubicus and Cretzschmar’s Bunting Emberiza caesia fill our forests with their melodious chorus during spring and summer.

The only unstreaked pipit around here and a characteristic breeder of sand dunes is the Tawny Pipit and this one shows well, holding to the grass edge. A pair of European Turtle Doves on a wire, followed by two soaring Common Buzzards …. They are rare breeders here, but at least, this species’ numbers are on the increase.

Laight has recorded some 100 species here, including Slavonian (Horned) Grebe and Red-rumped Swallow (the first is a rare migrant/wintering species only, while the second one is an uncommon breeder). It is the first morning of June, half past six and I am parked at the dam wall, scoping a mile long water surface surrounded with low hills.

There are 240+ breeding birds in Serbia, but the colonial breeders and raptors were treated separately, and for a few dozen uncommon species there wasn’t enough data for computer modeling software.

This email was flagging up the activities of a ‘sporting agency’ in Britain who were offering trips/holidays to Morocco to shoot Turtle Doves. Two of the three companies issued emails or statements suggesting that they would not run tours until they had researched the issue further, a third just removed the advertising.
