Best Bird of the Weekend (Last of May 2019)

Spotting Blackpoll Warblers around here breaks bittersweet; obviously, anyone would enjoy spotting one of these monochromatic songbirds, but with this late migrant comes the promise of months of little more than resident breeders. Corey has been enjoying the beach and the sun down in Virginia all weekend.

Where Are You Birding This Second Weekend of July 2014?

Enjoy your patches and your resident breeders. The reason I mention vacation birding is that I’m headed down to Virginia Beach this weekend for sun, sand, and who knows what else. Anyone who knows me knows my favorite kind of birding: vacation birding. I’ll take new birds in new habitat any day.

Traveling really rejuvenates the passion when local breeders become banal. I’ve only been in Virginia Beach for a few days and I’ve already knocked down most of my targets, including Blue Grosbeak and Yellow-breasted Chat at Back Bay National Wildlife Refuge.

And, until recently, those forests also hosted Townsend’s , Hermit , Black-and-White , Virginia’s , and even a Colima Warbler or two each year. So go ahead and take your summer breeders back. I have still seen each of these species out in the forest between two days and three weeks after they abandoned my yard.

Least Bittern at Arshamomaque Preserve

The last one were breeders also, at Massapequa Preserve. ). Imagine my joy, however, as on my walk to the tower a Virginia Rail sauntered past almost within touching distance. Sure, a birder had reported a cooperative Virginia Rail the day before but I didn’t expect lightening to strike twice!

I think there are many disreputable breeders, I think they are increasing a bloated supply of pets, and I think there are many purebreds already available from shelters. I also know there are people who want to buy from a breeder and no one else. Tags: breeders.

In Search of New York’s Breeding Birds

The next hour plus netted me a host of other species, including my two other targets, Virginia Rail and Common Gallinule. As always, the woods around the marsh were busy with breeders setting up shop. Not only that but the sunrise over the marsh (as seen above) was a wonder to behold.
