Before I was born, it used to be a rare breeding species in mountainous areas south of Belgrade, but became extinct after the 1960s due to intensive poisoning of wolves. There’s an eagle… a White-tailed Eagle , a relatively common and numerous breeding species of riparian forests along large water courses and fishponds.

It’s a reservoir, not a natural lake, and was formed by damming the Striminos river, which flows into Greece from neighboring Bulgaria (unfortunately bringing with it huge amounts of plastic rubbish, creating problems for the National Park.) This indicates peak breeding condition, but by May their pouches are back to pale yellow again.

First, 800 km of driving from Belgrade through Bulgaria to very NE corner of Greece and the Dadia Forest National Park with its 36 species of diurnal raptors, out of Europe’s 38. Then about a 100 km to the Ismarida Lake and Porto Lagos lagoons for breeding and migrating waders.

Black Stork and three pairs of White-tailed Eagles breed here. Other birds of the Rusanda are Great Bittern , Purple Heron , Eurasian Spoonbill , Meadow and rare Red-throated Pipit , Icterine Warbler , Eurasian Penduline Tit , Lesser Gray Shrike , breeding Red-footed Falcon , Little and Long-eared Owls , etc. eBird bar chart. #2

Only four species breed in Britain – the Yellowhammer, Reed Bunting, Corn Bunting and Cirl Bunting, but there are rather more in Europe, of which my favourite is the Black-headed Bunting. This is a Balkan special, and a bird I know well from Greece, Bulgaria and Cyprus. A singing Black-headed Bunting.

Explaining the increase in the number of sightings is difficult, as the Siberian breeding population is declining. In recent years the majority of the Red-breasted Geese have stayed in Romania, with much smaller numbers in Bulgaria. Last year the peak count of Red-breasts in Bulgaria was 800, with 14,600 over the border in Romania).
