Consequently, the Ross Sea has become a focus of numerous environmental groups who have campaigned for a world marine reserve. There are 11 species of birds that breed in the Ross Sea region. On the Balleny Islands Antarctic Fulmar , Antarctic Prion and Cape Petrel also breed. The region is also a major habitat for petrels.
