Photo courtesy Kimm Schroeder She also has some serious cats. Not just any type of house cat, she has Bengals. The kitten Venus is an F4 Bengal meaning she’s four generations (F4) removed from the Asian Leopard Cat which is a small wild cat from Asia. Lorraine even bought them a running wheel.

Birding Fengxian, Shanghai in summer

Black Drongos must be breeding here – this juvenile was terrorizing his parents with constant calls for food. As a consequence of frequently walking around in Shanghai, I have a fairly large number of cats in my home – picked up as kittens left on their own on the rather uninviting streets of the city.

The Hummingbirds of Western Montana

Three of those — the Black-chinned , Calliope , and Rufous Hummingbirds — breed in the Missoula area. That is, in extremely precise mathematical terms, three times more species of hummingbirds than breed near the Olde Homestead. It breeds into Alaska. It certainly drew plenty of feeder birds over the winter.

This is our thirteenth year of observing Pied Oystercatchers breed along the coast near Broome and it gets easier every year! They always nest from the end of June and they always nest in the same place or within a few metres if there is disturbance around the breeding territory. They are so predictable!
