Pied Oystercatcher breeding season is here again!

We have observed Pied Oystercatcher parents chase of White-bellied Sea-Eagles and unfortunately there are feral cats and feral foxes have become more prevalent too. Meanwhile, the other pairs of Pied Oystercatchers along Cable Beach have begun to breed as well. The post Pied Oystercatcher breeding season is here again!

We can’t even go in our garden without it going mental Has woke us up multiple times in the middle of the night and early mornings the breed of the dog is a Pomeranian and I have found that there behaviour traits from neglect is excessive barking.

Empty Pied Oystercatcher nests

There was evidence of feral cats and now we have seen foxes around Broome we know they will also be a threat to our local shorebirds. Pied Oystercatcher chicks can swim, but maybe feral cats will too if they are hungry. Some nests had clearly been there for some time and had contained eggs until recently.

We have been busy walking the beach and keeping an eye on our local Pied Oystercatchers and the two pairs that laid their eggs earliest for the 2018 breeding season and successfully hatched out their chicks have now lost their chicks to predation. Animal prints leading to and from a raided nest.

Owls or Microwaves?

I was amused by the cats’ wide-eyed expressions as they stalked the stereo looking for the owl. Also present along the north and south entrance roads were Song , White-throated and Fox Sparrows , the usual host of American Crows , and a sluggish, unresponsive American Robin. We found icterids, but in much-reduced numbers.
