The Cattle Egret Expansion

I’d like to introduce you to a diminutive heron, the Cattle Egret Bubuclus ibis. The Cattle Egret is native to Africa, where it is a familiar sight among herds of large mammals. They have expanded their range through Indonesia and into Australia and is found in post breeding dispersal as far north as South Korea and Japan.

Yellow-billed Spoonbills breeding

We were even more delighted as we followed some cattle tracks to discover not only more bird species than we had hoped, but also more Yellow-billed Spoonbills. Not only is it a bird species we rarely encounter, but we had never found a breeding colony before. Adult breeding plumage in Yellow-billed Spoonbills.

A Surprise Encounter

Birding Shanghai in June 2024

The Black-winged Cuckooshrike is breeding in several Shanghai locations – I suspect that some trees near the Nanhui hotel might be another one, given the vigorous singing of this bird. The Amur Paradise Flycatcher is another species breeding in Shanghai. Yellow-rumped Flycatchers are breeding in the same park.

Nanhui, Shanghai in August

Cattle Egret … though some of them seem to want to hide (which is really difficult for a white bird). Not sure if they are breeding but certainly they are trying, though I am not fully convinced of their competence. Amur Paradise Flycatcher : Was breeding in Shanghai this year, a first according to official records.

Critically Endangered: Sociable Lapwing

Sociable Lapwings breed in several areas along the Kazakhstani – Russian border and overwinter in Iraq, Sudan and northwest India. That can be traced back in time to 1875, when Alfred Brehm wrote that he had found Sociable Lapwings only alongside the domestic cattle. Sam claims that they are always there, 26 of them only a week ago.
