We sailed right into a group of more than a dozen Hoatzins (cover photo, by Tyler Ficker) with their orange mohawks and blue facial skin. We found Black-collared Swallows breeding in cracks among the lower riverside rocks. Indigenous community of El Remanso, right underneath the imposing monoliths of Cerros de Mavecure.

But the way it is, familiarity breeds (relative) contempt. I have seen this bird right at the Bund waterfront, possibly the most famous tourist spot in all of Shanghai. The Cattle Egret (or Eastern Cattle Egret , to be exact, but that would mess with my alphabetic order) can be seen in farmland around Shanghai.

According to the Florida Breeding Bird Atlas, the first confirmed breeding record was in Miami in July of 1938. Large swaths of the Everglades were being drained to make way for cattle ranching, citrus groves, and low density housing that included many overgrown, weedy lots. Then about a 100 km to the Ismarida Lake and Porto Lagos lagoons for breeding and migrating waders. The first thing to appear was its yellow bill – a locally rare Cattle Egret ! The local levee warden sometimes shepherds his cows here, and the eagle would stand right above him, giving him no second glance.

With the first rains we get mass frog breeding events and the flooded land is covered in tadpoles. All the tracks onto the station property were underwater and all of the Brahman Cattle have moved to the highest ground that they can find. In fact it is not just the cattle, but all of the creatures have moved into bushes and trees.

I had been contacted by Bill at Birds & Beans Coffee, a wonderful shade-grown distributor I’d been using for a few years, to help do a breeding bird survey on a local organic farm. Barn Swallows lined up on the wires outside his cattle barn and Grasshopper Sparrows sang unseen from uncut hayfields. Pretty sweet.

Around this time of the year, the first few waders are back in Shanghai from their breeding grounds far further up north. Generally, being back here early is not a very good sign – it may indicate a failed breeding attempt, as suggested for Asian Dowitchers in a paper on their presence in Lianyungang somewhat further north of Shanghai.

After five years of waiting and watching, we were so elated with this news of a successful breeding at the preserve that we applied for another grant from Audubon California. This property is also a site with vernal pools and uses cattle grazing for vegetation control. The other two tunnels dead end inside the nesting chamber.

The Great Egrets , Little Egrets and Intermediate Egrets are in breeding plumage and look quite spectacular. Intermediate Egret in breeding plumage. The average annual rainfall for Broome is around 500mm and we receive that rainfall over a few months in the summer, which is right now. A local cattle station out of town received 652mm in the same 24 hour period, so we got off lightly! Some of the local ephemeral lakes completely dried up and others almost did before the rain came.

My outing’s total count for water-dependent waterfowl, shorebirds, herons, gulls, and terns (I’m leaving land-loving Cattle Egrets out of this count) was around 120; the count for a similar date in 2018 was around 2000 individuals. A single Laughing Gull turned up in his breeding plumage, several months early.

It is kind of rare to see a Fairy Pitta during Shanghai’s spring migration as those passing through are all adults rather than inexperienced chicks, and they are in a rush getting to their breeding grounds – but I was lucky. This should not be a problem in Shanghai as the pitta has not been reported to breed here.

Interestingly for me, the research paper calls throwing out the eggs infanticide, which makes me feel a bit queasy as this might potentially be on the wrong side of the Roe vs. Wade (or “Right vs. Wrong”, as The Onion calls it) debate.
