After being killed they were plucked and salted for consumption during the winter. I hate to think what they tasted like.

The targeted rabbits are the unwanted inhabitants of capital Stockholm's parks, which are culled to protect the shrubs and trees which they gorge on. Many of them are domestic pets released by uncaring owners which then go on to breed. In Sweden, the way they deal with rabbit problems is to shoot them and burn them for fuel.

After all, what good is getting a kill if in doing the killing the predator is injured? It will never make it to the Paramo in the high Andes for winter nor return to the tundra to breed. This bird will not use resources on the wintering grounds nor take up a breeding territory on the tundra.

The latter is even captured in a somewhat gruesome video , in which the hornbill plucks a caged bird out of its cage and kills and eats it. At 15h59, the female picked up the fourth chick and killed it by repeatedly crushing it with her beak. One paper describes them breeding in a human settlement in abandoned clay jars.
