The male Bar-tailed Godwit are the first to show us breeding plumage and then the Red Knot and Curlew Sandpipers have two beautiful reds-red wine rather than cranberry juice! Here is a little test-there are 6 species of shorebird in the photo-can you identify them? Breeding colour becomes rather obvious!

Bill Schmoker , Nikon Birding ProStaff member, and I spent a day in the field testing the new Nikon EDG VR Fieldscope. Our outing on January 7th was based around chasing this winter adult male Long-tailed Duck at City Lake in the middle of Denver, CO. Few divers strike to the heart of birders than a male Ring-necked Duck.

A variety of species of geese, ducks and swans swim on the lake while the woods and reeds have every warbler imaginable. It’s full of waders, ducks and geese. I went to Väko Myr to test my luck and although the Black Grouse were a no-show I did see a pair of Bullfinch in the parking lot. Watch the signs!

One of the established ways to evaluate self-cognition in animals (including humans) is the mirror test. In the classic test, an animal is anesthetized and then marked on an area of the body the animal cannot normally see. There was a breeding pair at Binjiang Forest Park this June. Not going for the obvious either.
