The best laid plans… Last week, I had hoped to get permission to get onto the campus of one or Morelia’s many universities, to look for a family of Wood Ducks that apparently have arrived to spend the winter in its unusual habitat of marshy forest. While some American Kestrels breed in central Mexico, most are migratory.

Here in central Mexico, the winter season always seems to begin with the arrival of various members of the sandpiper family. I assume this is because so many of them breed in the Arctic and tundra regions, so their summer is much briefer than that of other birds. Let that be a lesson, to me. And when stilts party, they really party.

Contrary to alleged preferences among humans, the golden-headed cisticola has a shorter tail during the breeding season ( source ). “She monitors Pied Oystercatchers breeding along a 23km stretch of beach by bicycle and on foot.” It breeds in tree holes, presumably explaining the more commonly used name for it.

I discovered that one of the Pacific Loons was back, and the first breeding plumaged Purple Sandpiper I’ve seen (having only seen them on fall migration), and Arctic Hare cavorting in their changing coats. A Baird’s Sandpiper, our most common breeding shorebird.

Its mostly found on the ground in thickets or the edges of dense vegetation and usually in small family parties. Great White Pelicans showing the pink flush of breeding plumage. They are nomadic, especially in the non-breeding season and flocks are most easily found at waterholes when they appear to quench their thirst.

Head back to the town of Opovo, south of Baranda, and ask for the Kod Bobe Restaurant (Chez Boba), a second generation in the same family and the best restaurant in the area. Not only have the Magpie-larks been busy building their mud nests and the Tawny Frogmouths been breeding at the supermarket car park, but other birds arrived and started to breed. After a very good Wet Season with substantially more rain than normal over the first few months of 2017 the land was flooded and a huge variety of birds arrived in the Broome area to take advantage of the ideal conditions for breeding. The more brightly coloured female bird remained at the back of the family group as they swam to shore.

Though these plovers are common on the North Norfolk coast, their nearest breeding grounds are far to the north. A few do breed in Europe, on the extreme north-east of European Russia. Avocets, Black-necked Stilts , and Spotted Sandpipers breed at the Henderson Bird Viewing Preserve. In the meantime we were enjoying looks at waterfowl like Ruddy Ducks , Eared Grebes , and Redheads , as well as a couple of Lesser Scaup. It looked pretty darn nice through the scope though! One lifer down and one to go.

There were surprisingly few ducks, but there are hundreds of Plumed Whistling-Ducks at the Broome Poo Ponds now. The only ducks we saw were Pacific Black Ducks, Grey Teal and Hardheads. The Purple Swamphens were hiding amongst the reed beds and could been seen occasionally as they flew across the reeds. Sacred Kingfisher.

My Eastern Sibley served me well, replacing the Peterson’s with which I learned my ducks and waders. I was a little sad to see that the newer editions don’t have the second signature birds (Wood Duck for Eastern, Tufted Puffin for Western) and regional maps on the spine. This means that loons are no longer first!

Well-represented exotic families include starlings, ducks and doves and there are also many more individual species that now thrive here. Some uncountable species, like Mitred Parakeets , are in fact way more numerous than some of the countable species and they are clearly breeding in well-established populations.
