According to their website , Lassen Volcanic National Park provides habitat for approximately 216 species of birds in which 96 have been known to actually breed in the park. The most common member of the Grebe species around Broome is the Australasian Grebe- Tachybaptus novaehollandiae and it has taken advantage of our exceptionally good Wet Season early this year and has been breeding very successfully. During breeding season the Australasian Grebe has a very distinct pale yellow patch at the base of the bill.

Our first stop was Cable Beach to find the Pied Oystercatchers in their territory even though the breeding season is over. There were plenty of Australian Pelicans, Royal Spoonbills, Black-winged Stilt and Gull-billed Terns, but the numbers were down on the Plumed Whistling Ducks which normally line the edge of the ponds in their thousands.

It features lakes which can usually be relied upon for Neotropic Cormorant and White-faced Whistling Duck on the water with Kiskadees seemingly perched on every bank-side tree. The one for bird photographers (a Spot-billed Duck ) is shown below. So, the birds start collecting mud and small sticks. Nest building: a good activity for a rainy day.
