This comes from BirdLife Cyprus’ research officer Mike Miltiadou, and shared by Melpo Apostolidou: Waterbirds that bred on the island this year. Glossy Ibises Plegadis falcinellus had a successful second year at Famagusta Lake with five pairs producing 19 fledglings.

Horrible Hybrids

On BirdTrack, the British equivalent of e-Bird, the list of birds provided does allow for Tufted Duck x Ferruginous Duck to be recorded, but not Tufted Duck x Pochard. However, that’s exactly what I guessed the duck swimming in front of me had to be. My hunch was Tufted Duck x Pochard.

Because “duck, duck, goose” is a little too wintry (at least in the Northern Hemisphere) for a post written in the dog days of August. Researchers are planning to ask the American Ornithologists’ Union to make the split official. The bird is so rare and elusive that it was thought to be extinct.
