Back on the first weekend in May, I attended the Heron Festival at Clear Lake, one of the four aforementioned lakes which also include Eagle Lake, Lake Almanor and the Thermalito Afterbay of Lake Oroville. Like the breeding activity of many species this spring, the grebes were late, probably due to the unseasonable weather.

When discussing this topic for local media, I often say that because of their White-tailed Eagles , the Scottish island of Mull makes 2 million pounds per year from birders alone. By the end of a day, the best bird was the White-tailed Eagle that caught and ate a fish right in front of us – a species they have seen in the UK only once.

That trip was fun, as it reminded me of the delights of watching birds like Golden Plover and even Meadow Pipit on their breeding grounds. I see lots of Golden Plovers in the winter, but (like so many waders) they are birds transformed when in their breeding finery. Crakes are difficult to see on their breeding grounds.

Each evening the shorebirds head off on their migration to breed in the Northern hemisphere. A White-bellied Sea-Eagle was perched on the top of the cliffs on our visit this week and there were also a pair of Brahminy Kites. White-bellied Sea-Eagle observing the shorebirds on the beach. They do not build nests, but occupy old nests of Rooks and breed colonially among them. Red-footed Falcon’s breeding range starts less than 50 mi north of here and I hope that some will choose to join a local rookery and stay. Wait, those fingers, the upper one is not a buzzard… a small eagle, it’s a dark morph Booted Eagle !

Photographed within Beljarica: five White-tailed Eagles by Snezana Panjkovic. These handsome finches breed in the far north of Europe and come here for the winter only. Two hundred metres further on, two young White-tailed Eagles were soaring. Fish will lose their spawning ground, otters and White-tailed Eagles will be no more.

A White-tailed Eagle is calling somewhere from the forest. Judging by Google Earth, some 250 m / 800 ft away, there’s a Greater Spotted Eagle , dark adult that appears like a black hole, like an object pulling and eating all the light, itself appearing as dark as can be. Nearby are four very dark brown ducks… Tufted Duck females!

While regular in winter, Pygmy Cormorants do not breed in the vicinity and are absent in spring and summer. There is a breeding pair of White-tailed Eagles at the Veliko Ratno Island and they can be seen year-round, but the best chances are in winter, when they hunt ducks around the island.

Then about a 100 km to the Ismarida Lake and Porto Lagos lagoons for breeding and migrating waders. Farther on along the levee, there was a huge White-tailed Eagle standing on a big, old poplar. The local levee warden sometimes shepherds his cows here, and the eagle would stand right above him, giving him no second glance.
