Fortunately, there were still a handful of immature birds alive at sea, and a few years later they were back on Toroshima breeding again. That would have been awful.

In 1987, only 27 were left in the wild and drastic action was taken to save the species: all remaining birds were captured, the California Condor was declared extinct in the wild, and a captive breeding program was begun, initially carried out by the San Diego Wild Animal Park and the Los Angeles Zoo.

In the early 20th century, Imperial Eagles used to live not only in the northern lowlands of Serbia, but also in the southern highland plateaus. Curiously, some eagles were also observed by the Ada Ciganlija Island, within Belgrade – in the breeding season!

Our first stop was Cable Beach to find the Pied Oystercatchers in their territory even though the breeding season is over. I heard some sounds coming from a mangrove bush and we discovered a Horsfield’s Bronze-Cuckoo that appeared to have been raised by a protective Dusky Gerygone. Sharp-tailed Sandpiper.

I wonder what Americans would think if, in a Wikipedia entry, a Bald Eagle would be illustrated using a photo taken at an Albanian zoo. There was a breeding pair at Binjiang Forest Park this June.
