Of course, the California Condor is listed as “endangered” under the Endangered Species Act (ESA) and it has been famously subject to some of the most ambitious conservation efforts (including litigation ) ever undertaken for a bird. But condors have not been in the Pacific Northwest for more than a century.

The island is similar to Kapiti , cleared of introduced pests and used to hold endangered species. The Shore Plovers did well on the island, breeding a year after arriving (unexpected quickly as it turned out). The also show up on the mainland, particularly in Porirua Harbour which is across the water from Mana Island.

The new cub was born at the Jacksonville Zoo and Gardens to a mother who wasn’t able to care for him. When zoo keepers saw that the baby was not eating and having trouble gaining weight, they made the decision to hand-raise him. It was on the SSP and Jacksonville Zoo’s advice that the new baby was brought to Busch Gardens.

Following passage of the United States Endangered Species Preservation Act of 1966, the California Condor ( Gymnogyps californianus ) was among the first 75 species listed for protection, the so-called “Class of 1967”. A portion of all draft and bottle sales of Condor Kolsch will be donated to these programs.

If they can spare a glance upward, the busy grape-pickers might also be treated to another portent of the changing seasons in the Iberian skies overhead: the sight of flocks of White Storks ( Ciconia ciconia ) heading south from their summer breeding grounds in Europe to Africa, where they spend the winter on the warm savannas.

All the inhabited continents except Africa have experienced bird extinctions; however the 2012 update of the IUCN Red List shows a startling, but not altogether unexpected, trend in that more and more of our bird species are facing extinction. Dr. Clement Lanthier, Calgary Zoo president and CEO (is this a corporation??) It's off the table until somebody comes to the zoo and says, I want this and I'm willing to pay," said Lanthier. Lanthier doesn't hide his contempt for animal rights groups who lash out, without considering the role zoos play in conservation.
