Instead, much of central and southern Iberia experiences an intense hot and dry season, from June to September, and a wet season. Now, they head for south of the Sahara to catch the rains in the Sahel. The onset of the rains is highly variable.

Sadly, they no longer breed in Algeria, while in Turkey no free-flying birds remain. (In Intriguingly, there are far more Bald Ibises in captivity than there are in the wild, for this is a bird that breeds readily in confinement. Such an intimate encounter with one of the world’s rarest birds was a memorable experience.

Like the Common Yellowthroat , the Yellow Warbler breeds no further south than the central Mexican highlands. It does breed in the U.S. But do they warble?

Three live and breed here, two migrate through the country in large numbers (one of those also breeds here in small numbers), and another migrates through and winters in Costa Rica. Beginning this year, New York State embarked on its third-ever breeding bird atlas , and it’s the first one I’ve been able to participate in as a birder. Over the last several weeks there, I’ve watched them gather bits of straw and other sundry materials and ferry these back to their nest holes in the old barn walls and eaves.

These included nesting Lapwings, while we also added Little Ringed Plover ( pictured below ), Ringed Plover (four migrants, pausing briefly before heading north), and a fine Black-tailed Godwit in full breeding plumage. This fen has breeding Marsh Harriers, and we saw at least three different birds, while Cuckoos called close by.

However, the typical birding experience for someone down here also includes a large menagerie of other species such as Orange-winged Parrot , Mitred Parakeet , Egyptian Goose and Nutmeg Mannikin. Common Hill Mynas are easy to locate due to their loud, shrill calls. Could it be due to climate? Lack of feeding opportunities?
