Bigger than an Empidonax flycatcher and smaller than a Myiarchus , the Eastern Phoebe is usually only mistaken for a pewee, and even that becomes unlikely with experience. Black Phoebes eat bugs with the same gusto as any other flycatcher, but will also go after tiny fish.

Or maybe, after my experiences with the Scott’s Oriole in Union Square earlier that year, the Tanager just seemed unconfiding and hard to see. I didn’t have my binoculars, but it didn’t take long to suss out that it was a bright, shiny breeding-plumaged male Western Tanager. And that, that was exciting.

The park is home to not one, not two, but large three colonies of breeding seabirds: the Brown Noddy , Magnificent Frigatebird , and Sooty Tern. No, that was not a typo, the Sooty Terns fly non-stop for an average of five years before they return to the Dry Tortugas to breed. Lots and lots of birds. Each took merely a minute or two.

These tanagers breed only with each other, eschewing the company of parrots, warblers, and even other groups of tanagers, some of which are really, really beautiful. A fitting way for anyone to celebrate Darwin Day would be to go out and count a bunch of bird ( or tree, fish, etc.) Judgments of fitness are not necessary!

I am within one of Florida’s sub-tropical zones, and my birding experiences have expanded, with life birds galore. The first shorebird I saw was a Willet , already transitioning out of its breeding plumage and feeding with the gulls along the surf. Almost every lunch break I head out onto the beach, looking for birds along the sand.

The best birding season here is the winter when waterbirds come to overwinter in those lagoons, followed by migratory seasons and, to a lesser extent, breeding season. I recorded the song, which Merlin app identified as a Skylark’s, but I had enough experience to know better: it turned out to be a Greater Short-toed Lark.
