Having found my large Pied Oystercatcher family last week I have spent a lot of time with them this week. The parents moved them from their breeding territory as soon as they could fly, which makes sense because you don’t want them to eat all of the food that you will need to survive until the next breeding season.

It is breeding season and they are looking for mates! The breeding plumage of these birds is a lot darker now than during the rest of the year and the head, neck, breast and belly are almost black with chestnut wings and tail feathers. It looks similar to a pheasant in many ways, but is actually part of the cuckoo family.

I didn’t hang around, but took a few photos to capture the Tawny Frogmouth family that has once again bred close to home. We hadn’t been to an ocean as a family since we were in California back in December so we decided to head out to Nassau County’s Point Lookout, which is nicely situated on the west side of Jones Inlet. This large flock is generally the non-breeding birds and on one occasion we have observed a nest there, but we do not know the outcome of it. Every year we observe both egg and chick loss amongst our Pied Oystercatcher pairs along Cable Beach and also in Roebuck Bay during their breeding season. The breeding season starts around the end of June and there are still eggs being laid and chicks hatching, but now these are the second clutches of eggs. View from the nest area.

This year we have had high numbers of Magpie Geese once again in the Broome area and this last weekend we observed our first family groups for the season. The Magpie Geese families are on the move and the family groups that we saw last weekend all consisted of three adults and ten or more goslings.

As the boreal migrants head north, breeding season for the residents and austral migrants is beginning to pick up. There are other austral migrants breeding here, however – I’ve found two separate nesting sites of the incredulous looking Swallow Tanager thus far. I cannot verify or deny his success. Sounds like a party.

On a rising tide the Pied Oystercatcher family soon found a good position to watch and wait until the reef was exposed once again. Pied Oystercatcher family at roost. Adult Audouin’s Gulls now passing show heavily abraded plumage after breeding I covered the main species in my 23rd June article “When the sea becomes a desert”. These also show up, often in family groups, from the east and steadily approach the point before turning south-west towards the Atlantic.

They are part of a family of New World Quail which includes Gambel’s, Mountain, Scaled and Montezuma Quail, as well as the Northern Bobwhite. It did seem highly probable that the Magpie Geese would breed in the area this year. This was the first of many Magpie Geese families that we were to come across. Magpie Goose family-two adults. There is water as far as you can see and the families are swimming around in their family groups often very close to the road.

This is not due to its breeding habits, which it shares with the other hornbills – though those habits could well be described as appalling. The bird in the photo is a male, as indicated by the yellow rather than blue throat sack – and by the fact that it is outside of the hole at breeding time (the female is in the hole).

We rarely encounter family groups of Sooty Oystercatchers Haemotopus fulginosus ophthalmicus at home in Broome, but more commonly we encounter a flock of approximately thirty non-breeding Sooty Oystercatchers at the northern end of Cable Beach. That trip was fun, as it reminded me of the delights of watching birds like Golden Plover and even Meadow Pipit on their breeding grounds. I see lots of Golden Plovers in the winter, but (like so many waders) they are birds transformed when in their breeding finery. Crakes are difficult to see on their breeding grounds.

After an incredibly wet start to 2018 as a result of several tropical cyclones and other rain events the land remains saturated around Broome and as a result of this there are several bird species breeding that we don’t even encounter in dry years. In the breeding season their booming calls echo over the marshlands across Trinidad. The smallest of the three is also the smallest member of the heron family – the aptly named Least Bittern. The largest and by far the easiest (an extremely relative descriptor) to see is the hulking Pinnated Bittern. Stripe-backed Bittern.

Over the past few months there have been a lot of birds breeding around Broome with the excellent rain events that we have been having and the vegetation is at long last revived. Masked Lapwings have been busy breeding for some months now and some may well be on their second clutch of eggs.

After a very good Wet Season with substantially more rain than normal over the first few months of 2017 the land was flooded and a huge variety of birds arrived in the Broome area to take advantage of the ideal conditions for breeding. The more brightly coloured female bird remained at the back of the family group as they swam to shore.

Our first Pied Oystercatcher eggs for this year’s breeding season were laid early and were due to hatch last weekend. The eggs usually hatch out quite close together and then the family can all move away from the nest site. We were hopeful of finding the family moving through the dune system.
