Also known as the Flyeater, this tiny bird is the only representative of the Australasian warbler family found in mainland Asia, and very similar to my own Grey Warblers in New Zealand, even their songs. Straight off the bat we found a Little Grebe and a small flock of distant Cotton Pygmy-geese !

Tawny Frogmouths are actually more closely related to the Nightjar family. They breed after rain events and this was exactly the situation once again. Most were similar to what we had seen in September, with the addition of Magpie Geese in the flooded long grass. Tawny Frogmouth before it changes shape!

We immediately headed to an undisclosed location where Carlos had breeding Mangrove Cuckoos staked out. En route to our next stop we slowed down next to a park and spotted the now countable Egyptian Geese.

Of the Central Flyway states, Nebraska alone holds out in protecting the cranes, having proven by its longstanding Festival of the Cranes in Kearney that a crane is worth infinitely more alive and purring in the sky with its family than thudding, broken and bleeding, into a cornfield. Additionally, sandhill cranes reproduce very slowly.

Last year was the first year since we moved to Broome permanently at the end of 1999 that we encountered significant numbers of Magpie Geese to the area. The areas where the Magpie Geese have been breeding around Broome the past two years have been mostly inaccessible until recently due to the flooded land. Magpie Geese.

The whole area has been a breeding ground for many species and depending on the time of day you can expect a wide variety of species. We were only seeing a couple of families a few weeks ago and now they appear to be everywhere you look. Sunset is currently around 5.20pm, but does not vary much throughout the year here in Broome.

The most common member of the Grebe species around Broome is the Australasian Grebe- Tachybaptus novaehollandiae and it has taken advantage of our exceptionally good Wet Season early this year and has been breeding very successfully. During breeding season the Australasian Grebe has a very distinct pale yellow patch at the base of the bill.

We did find a family of Dollarbirds, though and it was the first time I had photographed four together! There were several Masked Lapwings and Black-winged Stilt that appeared to be breeding and also Black-fronted Dotterel. The numbers have grown exponentially in the last week and there were over four hundred Magpie Geese.

There are excellent birding opportunities along the highway throughout the year and the area still remains flooded from the rains over our Wet Season and it has been a breeding site for several species of birds. There were also families of Red-kneed Dotterels and Masked Lapwings. Glossy Ibis and Black-winged Stilt.

The lake was filled with families of Dusky Moorhens and Purple Swamphens (or Pukeko as we call them in New Zealand), all tending small groups of black chicks. Magpie-larks are neither magpies nor larks but are the largest of the monarch-flycatchers, and the most terrestrial of the family.
