It was a treat to see several wintering members of the esteemed Parulidae family. An uncommon species in Costa Rica, it was in a brushy area that reminded me of its breeding grounds. We did not look for owls nor had access to a marshy lagoon that would have given us more birds, and yet still saw or heard that many species.

That trip was fun, as it reminded me of the delights of watching birds like Golden Plover and even Meadow Pipit on their breeding grounds. I see lots of Golden Plovers in the winter, but (like so many waders) they are birds transformed when in their breeding finery. Crakes are difficult to see on their breeding grounds.

Just like we did last year my family spent this past weekend camping at North Lake State Park, up in New York’s gorgeous Catskill Mountains. The only harassment came from the resident Red-tailed Squirrel family – which seemed to be more curiosity than anything else, as their nest was just about two feet away. This is the only migratory warbler to live entirely within Mexico, breeding in the northeast and wintering in the southwest. His family’s 7 hectares (17 acres) of wooded land includes a lovely grassy marsh. Including a bonus Great Horned Owl and a Barn Owl certainly was a nice touch. also from my garden.

Brown Pelicans , and the northernmost Brown Booby breeding colony on this side of the Pacific. That larger clade is in turn sister to a clade containing the four remaining totipalmate bird families, which do still seem to be related, and which needed a new order name once pelicans were removed.

The little stiff-tails are almost year-round at Jamaica Bay though almost all leave to breed in the summer and in the depths of winter, when the ponds are almost completely frozen, they tend to head for open water. The variety of plumages that they show and the way different individuals molt at different times is interesting to me and I have stopped being surprised at seeing a small flock of ruddies with some nearly in full breeding, or alternate plumage, while others are still in their basic, or non-breeding plumage. I had a beautifull view on 5 horned grebe here (one in breeding plumage), in Ann Arbor Michigan, for the 3 seconds it lasted, until I heard a huge “CRRACK&# , and I fell through the ice. When I first saw it I thought it might be a snowy or a barn owl because it was almost white. And my first Killdeer of year! Wicked, right?
