It was a treat to see several wintering members of the esteemed Parulidae family. An uncommon species in Costa Rica, it was in a brushy area that reminded me of its breeding grounds. We did not look for owls nor had access to a marshy lagoon that would have given us more birds, and yet still saw or heard that many species.

Others have wintered here and are now in the process of leaving for the summer, such as the Black-faced Spoonbill – already in breeding plumage so as to not waste any time once arriving in Northern China. The only harassment came from the resident Red-tailed Squirrel family – which seemed to be more curiosity than anything else, as their nest was just about two feet away. Bon voyage , friend, may you traverse the next two thousand miles safely, may you not encounter any glass windows and may you find a mate and breed successfully!

This is the only migratory warbler to live entirely within Mexico, breeding in the northeast and wintering in the southwest. His family’s 7 hectares (17 acres) of wooded land includes a lovely grassy marsh. Including a bonus Great Horned Owl and a Barn Owl certainly was a nice touch. also from my garden.

Earlier this afternoon my small family made a drive out to Floyd Bennett Field in Brooklyn. We went because Desi, my four-year-old son, wanted to see a Snowy Owl after hearing about and seeing pictures of all of the owls his dad had been seeing this winter. Snowy Owl being harassed by an American Crow. That is not cheap.

A Little Owl blocked the road and asked for our Covid health certificates. Similarly, the Alpine Leaf Warbler is one of the more attractive species in an otherwise almost indistinguishable family of identical leaf warblers. (“But the difference in wing bars, Kai!”). The variety of plumages that they show and the way different individuals molt at different times is interesting to me and I have stopped being surprised at seeing a small flock of ruddies with some nearly in full breeding, or alternate plumage, while others are still in their basic, or non-breeding plumage. The little stiff-tails are almost year-round at Jamaica Bay though almost all leave to breed in the summer and in the depths of winter, when the ponds are almost completely frozen, they tend to head for open water. The story of the cahow, a “Lazurus species” that was thought to be extinct for over 300 years and then discovered to be breeding on a tiny remote island in Bermuda, is part of modern birding legend. In 1951, there were 18 breeding pairs of cahows discovered on three tiny islands. She uses both sources well.

Just keep an eye out for the Barred Owl perched on a Mini Cooper and that is where you will find him. If it were not for the resident cardinals and large number of breeding exotics, Matheson Hammock would be all but silent during the late spring and early summer.
