The order Suliformes holds a lot of special birds from anhingas and darters to cormorants and shags as well as frigatebirds, pelicans, and tropicbirds. But the sleekest of the sulids may be found in the family Sulidae. This booby’s blue feet mirror the color of clear skies from pale aquamarine to deep turquoise.

Furthermore we have another very special stork-like bird, the regal Shoebill , previously known as the Whale-headed Stork but now placed in its own family. During breeding season, their white plumage turns a delicate pink color, a lovely sight indeed. The Saddle-billed Stork has a similar Africa-wide distribution as the Marabou.

One interesting experience here was finding a baby terrapin on the road and picking it up to move it only for peter to call out a Common Iora , one of my two lifer families of the day. Most websites – particularly those specifically targeting kids – do not mention the fact that juvenile Australian Pelicans have shown cannibalism ( source ). On the plus side, a website of the Australian Government provides a printout for an origami of an Australian Pelican. Disappointing.

We did find a family of Dollarbirds, though and it was the first time I had photographed four together! Royal Spoonbill and Australian Pelicans. There were several Masked Lapwings and Black-winged Stilt that appeared to be breeding and also Black-fronted Dotterel. Four Dollarbirds. Black-fronted Dotterel nesting. Magpie Geese.

The lake was filled with families of Dusky Moorhens and Purple Swamphens (or Pukeko as we call them in New Zealand), all tending small groups of black chicks. Magpie-larks are neither magpies nor larks but are the largest of the monarch-flycatchers, and the most terrestrial of the family.

The adult Pied Oystercatchers were still at their non-breeding site at Gantheaume Point and will no doubt lay their first eggs for 2015 in the first week of July.

As we wandered along the trail we soon encountered family groups of both White-winged Fairywrens and Variegated Fairywrens. Little Black Cormorants and Australian Pelican. Apparently they breed to the south and return to feed at Lake Bindegolly. Australian Pelicans soaring in the thermals. Orange Chat.
