Both are common, really common, and both are essentially indistinguishable in non-breeding plumage. One interesting experience here was finding a baby terrapin on the road and picking it up to move it only for peter to call out a Common Iora , one of my two lifer families of the day. We did find a family of Dollarbirds, though and it was the first time I had photographed four together! Royal Spoonbill and Australian Pelicans. The lake was filled with families of Dusky Moorhens and Purple Swamphens (or Pukeko as we call them in New Zealand), all tending small groups of black chicks. Magpie-larks are neither magpies nor larks but are the largest of the monarch-flycatchers, and the most terrestrial of the family.

As we wandered along the trail we soon encountered family groups of both White-winged Fairywrens and Variegated Fairywrens. Little Black Cormorants and Australian Pelican. Firstly I would like to just do a little update on the Pied Oystercatcher family that were a large part of my life for the last few weeks of 2014. The adult Pied Oystercatchers were still at their non-breeding site at Gantheaume Point and will no doubt lay their first eggs for 2015 in the first week of July.

Most websites – particularly those specifically targeting kids – do not mention the fact that juvenile Australian Pelicans have shown cannibalism ( source ). On the plus side, a website of the Australian Government provides a printout for an origami of an Australian Pelican. Disappointing.

An Australian White Ibis flew in whilst I searched for the family of Dusky Moorhen that I have observed there recently. We also went to the Toora Poo Ponds where we were able to add Australian Pelicans , Royal Spoonbills , Yellow-billed Spoonbill , Eastern Great Egret , Hardhead , Eurasian Skylark and more.
