Wood-Wrens , birds of the family Henicorhina , are very small wrens of Central and South America that like to live very close to the ground, in dense forest underbrush or elfin forests. There was, inevitably, another group of Little Friends present at Cerro de Garnica that day, and in exactly the large numbers I had hoped for.

Hey, in 1959 Walt Disney set up a studio on the island and filmed Swiss Family Robinson there! These isles of Saint Giles are beaten tirelessly by the wind from the open ocean, the hardy vegetation present is gnarled and contorted. Both Brown and Red-footed Boobies actively breed on Little Tobago as well as Saint Giles.

Recently, a group of nature photographers were spotted using live fish to bait a family of Grey-headed Fish Eagles in Singapore, where the species is listed as Critically Endangered, with only about 12-18 breeding individuals left in the wild. Doing so, however, presented a few problems.

I have followed the breeding activity of the Pied Oystercatchers in Broome along Cable Beach since July 2000 when I found the first nest site and the birds have continued to use the same territories, though there have been some partner changes. I can also monitor any movement along the coast during the year when they are no longer breeding.

Another cool fact was learning that the Barn Swallows has started to breed in South America since the 80s. This is quite a remarkable fact if one thinks that this is the only (and first to do this) migratory bird to change its breeding and migratory habits. Swallows have migrated north to south along the Americas for millennia.

Burrowing Owls have been present at our school camera location since at least 1984. The colony has grown supporting up to 3 pairs of owls, all breeding at once! Once we had both developed blisters we had the perfect excuse to go and visit a local freshwater clay-pan and check on the bird life present. The edge of the pool was inhabited by both Black-fronted and Red-kneed Dotterel and these species are very nomadic and not always present at this location. Red-kneed Dotterel. Sacred Kingfisher.
