Over the past few months there have been a lot of birds breeding around Broome with the excellent rain events that we have been having and the vegetation is at long last revived. Our first Pied Oystercatcher eggs for this year’s breeding season were laid early and were due to hatch last weekend. The eggs usually hatch out quite close together and then the family can all move away from the nest site. This offers a lot more protection than the exposed nest site. However, this is far from unusual.

Red-billed Curassow ( Crax blumenbachii ), a large, ground-dwelling bird belonging to the same family as the more familiar Plain Chachalaca of southern Texas, was never a very widespread species. Having a family of endangered Red-billed Curassow willingly approach me to within such a short distance is definitely one of them!

The family of Pied Oystercatchers soon made their move to Gantheaume Point. Gantheaume Point offers both food and protection for a young Pied Oystercatcher chick, which is very important when they are unable to fly. Typically the whole Pied Oystercatcher family spend a lot of time either feeding or roosting.

Of the sixteen pairs of Pied Oystercatchers between Gantheaume Point and Willie Creek on the south side, which is a length of breeding territories covering 23 kilometres-just over 14 miles-only one chick fledges most years. On a side note, the bird is also kind of ugly, so maybe the chicks never seeing their father has a certain protective function. Contrary to alleged preferences among humans, the golden-headed cisticola has a shorter tail during the breeding season ( source ). The one bird I did not see here, however, was the Bateleur Eagle … One highlight in the area is the Saddle-billed Stork , likely to be the tallest species in the stork family. There is a very distinctive smell found on seabird colonies, where thousands upon thousands of birds come to breed and, coincidentally, deposit large quantities of waste. As I have explained before these islands are the best place for a lot of the birding here because they are more easily protected from introduced mammals which wreck such havoc on the wildlife here.
