Red-billed Curassow ( Crax blumenbachii ), a large, ground-dwelling bird belonging to the same family as the more familiar Plain Chachalaca of southern Texas, was never a very widespread species. Our strategy on each day was to be the first people on the road in the morning. Curassows are such stately birds. Or so we thought.

Of the sixteen pairs of Pied Oystercatchers between Gantheaume Point and Willie Creek on the south side, which is a length of breeding territories covering 23 kilometres-just over 14 miles-only one chick fledges most years. Each pair has a strategy and sometimes it is successful and sometimes it is not.

Though these plovers are common on the North Norfolk coast, their nearest breeding grounds are far to the north. A few do breed in Europe, on the extreme north-east of European Russia. If the threats to the species in the wild (hunting and habitat loss) are significantly reduced, a captive-bred population could be re-introduced, if agreed as part of an overall recovery strategy.

In addition to the hordes of Barn Swallows , which are only to be expected at Flushing Meadows, where they breed, there were several Tree Swallows , two Cliff Swallows , and a trio of Bank Swallows ( Sand Martins to you folks across the Atlantic). The Cliff Swallows and Bank Swallows were a pretty nice pickup this late in the season.

Avocets, Black-necked Stilts , and Spotted Sandpipers breed at the Henderson Bird Viewing Preserve. Well, they weren’t so much of a flock as they were a group of birds all following their own foraging strategy in the same area. You would certainly not see an American Avocet in the middle of the desert without water being present.

We are into the second attempt at breeding for this season in Broome for Pied Oystercatchers. These parents have a strategy where they nest away from the reef and then walk the chicks the 2 kilometres there within a few days of hatching. We had one pair attempt 5 times in 2009, so they don’t give up easily!

The one bird I did not see here, however, was the Bateleur Eagle … One highlight in the area is the Saddle-billed Stork , likely to be the tallest species in the stork family. Another member of the stork family, the African Openbill , looks like it is could benefit from a good orthodontist. And sadly, it is listed as Endangered.
